Important collection of Mayan archaeological artifacts housed in a sleekly designed setting.via Google

The most important museum stop in the city for understanding the region’s Maya heritage without leaving the hotel strip. It pairs well with the nearby archaeological site and gives the trip more context.

Good to know
Allow 1-2 hours; good value for a beach-day break

This place was amazing 🤩 The only issue I had was the museum itself with artifacts is on the third floor and there is no air conditioning so it's extremely hot and uncomfortable. Be warned that they take only cash and do not give change so be prepared. It's $210 pesos fee for travellers. There are a tonne of iguanas on the walking path to the pyramid. The outside portion is amazing with all the mangroves and the remnants of buildings. It's worth the money.

Visited this museum with a tour group, expecting to learn about Mayan culture, archaeology, and Cancun’s history. However, we were very disappointed. The building was poorly maintained, with broken air conditioning and an elevator during our visit, and some areas inside were dark and lacked proper lighting. Many descriptions were only in Spanish, and some exhibit halls had no displays at all. The outside area looked neglected and rundown. The archaeological sites outside were somewhat better, but numerous mosquitoes, which our guide didn’t mention beforehand, made the experience uncomfortable. Overall, I wouldn’t recommend visiting—it’s better to skip this museum. If you decide to go, make sure to bring mosquito repellent.

For a smaller museum, very low-key, only 100 pesos, this place has some incredibly beautiful Mayan artifacts (I believe dating from about 200 A.D. through the Spanish invasion and pillage beginning in the 1500's) that are absolutely worth seeing. I spent about 70 or 80 minutes here without reading much of the placards (Taking pix. Note: unfortunately many pictures have some glare from the glass enclosed cases.), including walking the whole San Miguelito Trails. Zona Arqueológica de San Miguelito (pathways through jungle-like ruins) is within the property of the Museo. Watch out for mosquitos!

Small but focused museum, exhibits are well done and informative. The building itself is interesting with a gallery above an open courtyard which leads to a lovely walk in a natural landscape including Mayan ruins and native fauna. Very happy we decided to visit!

The museum is decent, there are runis from 1200 AD or so. If you have some time it is worth a visit. It costs MX $200. There are Iguanas that roam the grounds and are friendly.
