The castle is amazing for its significance in the history of Lisbon and Portugal. Upon arrival, you can download a free audio guide which explains about the history of the city and the castle which is interesting and about the right length. The views of the city are mesmerising and there is a kiosk and restaurant up there if you want to spend some time admiring the view with some food or drink. You could even pack a picnic. The museum was mainly fragments of artefacts which had been found during various excavations of the site. It was interesting but didn’t spend too much time in there. If you are not too afraid of heights, it is exciting to walk around the top of the castle’s walls for even more spectacular views. The castle has a very casual, public feel to it with peacocks roaming the grounds; people painting watercolours on the grass; locals having picnics in the garden. You could see it in 1-2 hours or spend all day there depending on your schedule! It is recommended to book online beforehand - you can walk straight in that way.
Breathtaking view of the whole city. I’m so stunned by the beauty of this place. Not very big but interesting to visit. The fantastic peacocks have an impeccable beauty with immense feathers which made it worth visiting on its own. Must go for all ages! WATCH OUT, the stairs are not normed, I sprained my ankle. #Stillworthit.
Castelo de S. Jorge is a very impressive historic castle overlooking Lisbon, and it quickly became one of my favourite spots in the city. I visited in January, so it wasn’t too crowded and the whole visit felt very calm and relaxed. It was a really chill walk through the grounds and along the walls. The panoramic views over Lisbon from the top are absolutely breathtaking – honestly better than any other viewpoint I found in the city. The ruins are fascinating to explore, with lots of little corners, old walls and pathways that really give you a sense of the history of the place. As a bonus, there are peacocks wandering around the area, which adds a really charming and unexpected touch to the visit.
This was one of the best photo spots we visited with the Lisboa Card. The view over Lisbon is absolutely breathtaking and well worth the climb up the stairs. The panoramic city view was incredibly rewarding, and we were even lucky enough to enjoy it under perfect weather. It truly made our day in Lisbon unforgettable.
A remarkable historic site overlooking Lisbon. The fortress was built by the Arabs in the 11th century during the Moorish period and later taken by the Portuguese in the 12th century during the Christian reconquest. It has since played an important role in the city’s history. The complex offers many beautiful viewpoints over Lisbon and the Tagus River, making it a great place for photos and for understanding the layout of the city from above. Walking along the walls and towers is particularly enjoyable. The entrance fee is 17 EUR for an adult as of April 2026. It’s better to visit early in the morning to avoid the crowd and large messy groups that tend to arrive later in the day. Enjoy 😎🏰
