Matu benefits greatly from its address. Strip away the prestige of the location, and it is difficult to imagine the restaurant generating the same level of demand. For a place that can easily reach $300 per person, the gap between ambition and execution becomes noticeable almost immediately. Flaws That Are Difficult to Overlook • Weak conceptual identity: The grass-fed Wagyu narrative feels diluted. Guests appear to come because the restaurant is well located and reliable—not because the concept is powerful or memorable. • Lack of fine-dining discipline: Cutlery wrapped in napkins, visible stacks of kitchen towels near the cashier, and staff folding cloths during service signal operational looseness. These are details that should be resolved before guests walk in. • Staff presence lacks warmth: The team is attentive and professional, yet not particularly candid or engaging. Most of the staff appears overly serious, and the overall energy feels restrained. Explanations are minimal, with some dishes arriving at the table with little context—missing an opportunity to elevate the experience. • No bread offering: Unusual for a steakhouse and especially surprising within a tasting-style format. It subtly reduces the perception of generosity. • Coffee program falls short: No espresso available—only French press—and even that took considerable time due to an error. It was not offered as a courtesy afterward, which would have been an appropriate recovery gesture. • Steak knives feel inexpensive: While not serrated (a positive), they lack the weight and craftsmanship expected in a restaurant centered around premium beef. • Noise level is high: The room leans more energetic than refined, making conversation challenging at times. • Valet is inefficient: $15 is reasonable for Beverly Hills, but the wait to retrieve the car feels disproportionately long. • Fries are mediocre: Easily forgettable—particularly disappointing in a restaurant that should obsess over every detail on the plate. • Bone broth is good, but not memorable: Flavorful yet far from mind-blowing. Given the small portion, it almost feels like it should be complimentary rather than included in the paid menu. What Works • Tenderloin: Delicious, very flavorful, and properly cooked—one of the highlights of the meal. However the lettuce with so much garlic destroyed the experience. • Wagyu tartare: Very well executed, brightened by yuzu and lifted by the gentle heat of sansho pepper. Adding more toast would improve balance and usability for the portion size. • Desserts: • Panna cotta was well made—clean, pleasant, and enjoyable. • The chocolate cake, however, missed the mark, with an unusual texture and a flavor that did not feel refined. ⸻ Overall, Matu delivers competent food and a visually appealing environment, but the experience does not consistently align with the expectations set by its price point. It is a good restaurant—but not yet operating at the level of a truly great steakhouse.
I had an excellent experience. The service was attentive and friendly, and the atmosphere had a great vibe-relaxed but lively. The food was outstanding. the meat was cooked perfectly and full of flavor, and the side dishes complemented it really well. The drinks were also a highlight— perfectly made and delicious. Overall, everything felt well done and thoughtfully prepared. I’ll definitely be coming back
The flavors!! LOVE the tasting option so much. We will definitely have to come back and try more of their dishes. We made reservations online and didn't have to wait at all when we arrived. We ordered the Matu dinner for two with an extra side of garlic bread. The bread came out with the tartar and it was all so delicious. The filet was my favorite. From the bone broth to the final course ... the timing of everything was spaced out perfectly as well. The vibe is chic and the service was attentive. Highly recommend making the drive if you're not nearby.
Stopped by on a whim after an appointment in Beverly Hills. It was Thursday around 5pm, but the place was already packed. Asked to be seated at the bar so we can try the cheesesteak. Front desk was very pleasant and helpful, giving up an approximate wait time of 10-15 mins which was spot on. Service at the bar was great and loved that you can order from the full menu. We don’t get out this far west often, so we ordered the Matū dinner which is a minimum of two persons and the cheesesteak. First the cheesesteak. The hype is real. From the toasted bread, quality of the meat and cheese and I loved the pepper inside. Perfection. Will need to try their location in Pasadena which is much closer. Yeah! The Matu dinner was pretty fire as well. Bone broth and tartare were the standouts for us. I’m not a big fan of tartare either. Beef cheek, filet, ribeye and broccolini were are very good, but dishes I’ve had as good or better. All in all I’m happy we stopped by and would do so again when in the neighborhood. Bar service was excellent and something we would prefer again for the cheesesteak! Key notes: I was underdressed (shorts and a tee shirt) not planning on a sit down dinner, but staff were pleasant and didn’t mention anything :). Most people were not in shorts, so dress up a bit if you don’t want stares :). Street parking is available but valet is super convenient. Cheesesteaks were only being served at the bar and not in dining room.
Nice place, good vibes and excellent service. Love the mixed drinks. We ordered ala carte menu. The prix fix menu had very small portion of the beef. For meat lovers, I recommend this restaurant. Must try when in Beverly Hills. They have valet or park across the street, 2 hrs free before 6pm or $5 flat after 6pm. Open sitting at the bar. You can only order the Philly cheesesteak sandwich at the bar or you can the prix fix for 4 at the table. Reservation is recommended. Loved this place!!!
