New York has no shortage of burger joints, but an Indian burger spot? It was a first for me, and Rowdy Rooster made sure it was a memorable one. A classic NYC hole-in-the-wall, this place is almost designed to be missed. Blink, check your phone, or dodge one too many pedestrians, and you've walked right past it. Try not to, it's worth the stop. Pricing sits a little on the higher side for a combo, but let's be honest - this is New York. The burgers are bold, satisfying, and built to impress. I went for the chicken and veggie sandwiches, both dressed with a mango lime sauce that genuinely were very flavorful. The tomato aioli on the side was another win. And the fries? Crispy, golden, and dusted with a Cajun-meets-Indian spice blend that somehow makes complete sense and zero sense at the same time - in the best way. Rowdy Rooster is a must-visit: come ready for real Indian heat and flavor.
I know that this place is known for their sandwiches; but as I was getting takeout, I thought it best to order a bowl, so that the bread wouldn't get soggy by the time it was consumed. I got the fried chicken bowl, with medium spice. I'm pretty good with spicy, and medium spice was just about enough for me - if I had gone a level higher, it may not have been a pleasant experience. The flavors were good; but this is not a dish that I would come back to again. Glad to have finally tried it, though.
This place has been on my bucket list since Padma Lakshmi recommended it. The sandwich was great and the fries were arguably better. I had the spicy sandwich with dark meat. One disappointing thing I heard from the guy over the counter was that they were closing all physical locations and moving to online ordering only. As someone who loves the city and loves physical locations, especially eating at physical locations, I hope they reconsider.
Come hungry - the sandwich is huge! After eating this sandwich - it just seems so obvious - that a fried chicken sandwich with Indian flavors would be amazing. I got the hot chicken sandwich - it’s gigantic with the the right amount of heat. The chef is a genius - switching out mayo and pickles for mint chutney and red onions - bro, chefs kiss!! The Hakka chili dip - spicy and powerful flavor - good for both dipping fries and the sandwich in. It has a tang that reminds me of Indian Achar (pickle). Also glad I got the spiced fries- they have a nice masala flavor. Will be back soon with the family!
I am sorry the chicken sandwich didn’t stand out for me. Nothing compared to the Koreans in the nearby Korea town! At $15 a bit overpriced. Chic fa-lay is similar minus the Indian sauce, but for $15 will include a tasty milkshake!
