- Roast pork (char siu) over cabbage and rice
Reviews from Google
CASH ONLY. This spot is all about no‑frills standard Cantonese roast meats. The menu is simple — roast pork, roast duck, or chicken over white rice with steamed napa cabbage — and both the small and large come packed to the brim. I got the roast pork and roast duck combo. The duck was the standout: tender, flavorful, and easily what I’d order on its own next time. The pork was average- prefer my roast pork on the fattier side, so it wasn’t as juicy or flavorful as other places nearby. I also skipped the sauce (personal preference), though the standard is sauce on top. What really impressed me was the efficiency. The two guys working were cutting, packing, and taking cash in a rhythm that kept the line moving, and they were meticulous about changing gloves every time they handled money. Small detail, big impact. It’s cash only, strictly takeout, and the shop is tiny — maybe four people can stand inside — so plan ahead, especially in bad weather. I waited about 20 minutes with around 10 people ahead of me, and the line doubled by the time I left. Simple, satisfying, great value. And with Sara D. Roosevelt Park right across the street, it’s the perfect spot to take your meal and enjoy it outside!
Wah Fung is the definition of a no-frills Chinatown institution. A true hole-in-the-wall spot where the focus is squarely on the food, not the ambiance. Service is fast and efficient, but depending on the time of day (and season), expect a line that can stretch to 30 minutes. It moves quickly, though, and the payoff is worth it. The move here is simple: roast pork over rice. The pork is beautifully caramelized with crisp edges and tender, juicy meat beneath. It’s served over rice with a side of cabbage The roast duck is also solid, though be prepared to navigate bones throughout. At around $6 for a generous plate (as of my last visit), it remains one of the best value meals in Manhattan. Cash only! come prepared.
Wow absolutely delicious. If you can only choose one, you must try the char siew/barbecue pork. That was amazing. If you can add on, get the roasted duck! The skin was crazily fragrant and fatty. By no means is this a healthy meal but you will enjoy every bite of it. It does comes with a side of veges for free if it matters. I got the 3 combination with rice and it costs 9.50 only.
We did a cheap-eats food crawl through the historically rich streets of NYC’s Chinatown, and Wah Fung No. 1 Fast Food absolutely earned its name. This is a cash-only spot, and you should expect to wait at least 20 minutes in line, but the payoff is worth every second. The roast pork and duck are incredibly flavorful, tender, and satisfying. We asked for extra sauce, and that was the right decision. Do not skip that step. The value here is unmatched. You can get a small lunch plate for just $6, which comes with a generous portion of rice, steamed cabbage, and your choice of roast pork, duck, or chicken. We ordered the large plate with all three meats, shared it between the two of us, and still had leftovers for later that evening. One important note: if you order the roast duck, eat carefully. The duck is chopped into bite-sized pieces with the bone still inside, so be sure to eat slowly and stay aware. If you’re anywhere near Chinatown or doing a historic food crawl of NYC’s best cheap eats, Wah Fung should absolutely be on your list. Incredible food, unbeatable prices, and a true New York experience.
What a wait but for the price and food quality, it was well worth it. Definitely go early to avoid longer queues. That would probably mean opening time 🤣. Ordered the 2 meat for $9 nett. Generous serving of BBQ pork (Char siew) and Roast Duck (that was not just bones and meats which some of the other restaurants serve in Chinatown). If you feel in the mood for some pastries as after meal snacks, you can check out the shop on the right of it.
