First visit after the reopening, and one does rather hope the proprietor has weathered whatever financial storms came his way. The renovation is immediately noticeable. Brighter, cleaner, and altogether more civilised than before, without losing its unpretentious charm. It feels like a place that has tidied itself up without trying too hard to impress. As for the eel rice, reassuringly consistent. The quality sits roughly where it always has. Not extraordinary, not chasing perfection, but comfortably familiar. And frankly, that is rather the point. What I’ve always appreciated about this establishment is its refusal to drift into self-important territory. Eel rice, in my view, belongs to the people. It should be accessible, satisfying, and reasonably priced. Not plated like a museum piece with a corresponding bill to match. Is it the best you’ll ever have? Certainly not. But it lands in that agreeable middle ground where the flavours are honest, the portions fair, and one leaves content rather than contemplative. And sometimes, that is exactly what one wants.
Now the management team is totally changed. Also the decoration of the restaurant is much cleaner. Whole restaurant is like the new restaurant, only the name is the old one . The taste is also marvellous. Eel is very fresh and tasty. For sure I will come back , but please don’t make a lot of people queue.
The eel rice is a must have here - delicious! We got there too late for their sashimi set…all gone so settled for the Tonkutsu set, which tasted a bit greasy. But the pairing of pickled tempura side dish was perfect with that. My best experience was with the staff here: lady at counter was patient and clear since I needed to do a last minute order change. The old lady that was clearing the table next to us gave me direction on where to order and where to get teas. She kindly checked on me again to see if I got what I wanted. So sweet! 😍
Excellent unagi! The eel is very thick and fat, juicy to the bite and meat is very tender! Taste is excellent, again I did not go early enough to get the very limited eel liver! Mini raw oyster is a surprise find and pairs very well with sake. Can skip the tempura though. Also, be prepared to order else face wrath of the old lady 😂
Unagi rice was pretty good. I like the grilled squid, it was done just right. Not chewy or rubbery. Self served tea and other beverages to buy from the vending machine. Take note that half way through your meal, server could get other diner(s) to sit with you (without asking permission). Find this action a little abrupt. The leafy vegetable appetizer is good but not the raddish, it has a very odd vinegar taste which is not to my liking. Overall it's an average dining place for me.
